Fun Zone: Student Work: Kids Speak For Pets

Kids Speak for Pets is a unique collaboration between an animal shelter, Boys and Girls Club, Kid Scoop News and community sponsors. It provides reading, writing and humane education to more than 10,000 children and their families in Sonoma County. Over the course of a year, the program conducts humane education-themed writing workshops at the Valley of the Moon Boys and Girls Club. By incorporating a publishing opportunity and a pet welfare curriculum into the writing workshop program, students see a purpose to their reading and writing activities and become motivated to master their skills to write a clear and compelling article. They are also given a meaningful way to serve and connect with their local community through opportunities to have their articles published in Kid Scoop News and on the website.
Kids Speak for Pets thanks our generous sponsors:

Stories from the Maxwell Boys and Girls Club

Mulan the Fantastic
I’m writing about the dog who is so small that she can go under the fence and run to a preschool! Mulan is a one year old female Chihuahua She is black and white and has a white stripe between her eyes.
The folks at Pets Lifeline have described her as jumpy, outgoing, and vocal.
If I could adopt her I would be happy, but my house has lots of kids. My mom does not want a new dog right now.

The Amazing Preston
I chose Preston to write about because he looks like my dog He is a white male Japanese Chin/Spaniel cross and he is about 1 ½ years old. He has the color white all around except for his face which has some black. His ears are small and they flop down. He has dark brown patches under his eyes. He looks like a little angel.
Preston is playful and smart. He seems happy and loving. He can be quiet, too.
Preston and my dog Chili would be a great couple. They would take good care of my little sister while she is asleep, and this would help my mom. He would be a great dog to sit with while we are watching TV.

The Peaceful Soledad
Soledad is a female domestic shorthaired black and white cat. She has a black nose and cool eyes. Soledad is older but she is still playful. I think she is sweet, friendly, and peaceful. I think she is a cat who cares.
If she came to my house I would give Soledad the things she wanted and take really good care of her. I’d make sure that it would be quiet in my house for Soledad.

The Playful Teddy Bear
Teddy Bear is a fluffy male buff tabby with white. He is 2 years old. I like him because he tried to grab my pencil when he saw it. I picked him to write about because he is playful, nice, quiet, and cuddly. I also think he is a good listener when he is calm.
I would want Teddy Bear to go to a nice, warm house with playful people.

The Sensitive Mia
Mia is a small Chihuahua with a black nose and brown fur. She is a puppy. She is sweet and nice, and she is very shy. When I walked in the dog section and I saw her I knew she was the one for me. Pets Lifeline calls her a cuddle bug, sensitive, and sweet.
I think if Mia went to my house to live she should have a comfy fluffy bed with two blankets and her food bowl next to her bed.

Sweet Lila
I chose this cat because she has pretty eyes and soft fur. She is a beautiful color, and she has a pretty striped tail.
She is described as a rough player, playful and active, and high energy. When I saw her she was quiet and sort of shy. I think she is sweet.
Lila should go to someone who will love whatever side of her personality she shows.
Stories from the April Sassarini Group

Paisley the Cat
This is a story about a fluffy stray kitten named Paisley. She is a 4 month old female with pretty gray and white fur. Her fur is long and so are her whiskers. She looks like she has a moustache!
When I first say her she was sleeping in her bed in the Kitten Room at Pets Lifeline. I thought she looked like an angel. She was shy at first but she let me pet her because she likes being petted.
A good family for Paisley would love her a lot! They would let her sleep on the bed if she wanted to. Then she would stay happy.

Paisley has white and gray fur that is fluffy. She has a long tail, green eyes, and a pink and black nose. She looks like she has a mustache. I think she can be described as shy, kind, quiet, friendly, and scared. She loves being petted. When i looked at her sleeping in her bed I thought she looked like an angel.
A family for Paisley should love her and give her a happy life. It would change Paisley’s life.

Penelope Pretty Paws the Amazing Cat
Penelope Pretty Paws is a shy 6 month old kitten. At first Pets Lifeline thought she was a feral because she acted scared. When I came through the door she hid in her bed. She is still shy but she could be friendly. She loves being petted and stays calm and quiet. I could pet her for a while.
I chose Penelope because I love the colors of her fur. She is a medium haired brown tabby with white. Her fur is fluffy and furry. She has beautiful gold eyes and her ears have tufts of fur that stick out sideways. Penelope has really long whiskers and they are the color of snow. She licks herself a lot. I think she is very concerned about herself.
I think Penelope Pretty Paws should go to a family that loves her and cares for her. She is a wonderful cat. Anyone would be lucky to have Penelope Pretty Paws the amazing cat even though she's a stray. I would love to have Penelope Pretty Paws as my cat!

Reba the Cute Star Chihuahua
My visit with Reba was a fun day! She is a beautiful red long haired Chihuahua mix. She came to Pets Lifeline as a stray, and she is about 4 years old. Her tail is long and fluffy and her ears stand out to the side. She weight 8 pounds.
Reba is very shy. Also, she is a type of dog that is really a cuddle bug and a busy bee. She is sensitive, too. She is good with dogs and cats and she likes playing with other dogs. She also likes going on walks.
I hope that you like this story. I hope Reba has a happy life with a nice family that loves her and cares for her as much as I do. Reba is such a nice dog! I hope she lives forever!

Aida the Opera Cat
Can you imagine Aida living in a dark mansion with a black dog, a black lizard, snakes, and a vampire? They are best friends and haunt people… ha, ha, ha, cough, cough… yeah, right! Let’s get on with the interview!
Aida is a stray who was found at The Schellville Grill when she was 3 months old. This sweet girl is fuzzy with yellow eyes and a black nose. Her tail is long and her ears stick straight up. She has long whiskers. She is very pretty. She is friendly and likes you petting her. She loves kitty treats.
We think a kitty with an awesome name deserves an awesome home. Maybe she won't live with vampires, but we hope she will have lots of best friends.

Elvis is a Chihuahua puppy. He loves to play with cats, other dogs, and children. He also loves playing with toys and taking walks and hikes.

The Escape Artist
I opened the door and, whoosh, a cat lunged under my legs sprinting for the main entrance. He dodged big hands reaching down to grab him as everyone yelled, “Get that cat! Get Stilton!” All of a sudden a huge man came out of corner wearing big rubber gloves. He got in the position to catch Stilton. I finally realized what had just happened and grabbed Stilton. (I think I dreamed this part!)
I went up to the counter and asked the lady about this cat. She said, “Stilton is a playful cat who loves to escape. He is a short haired gray tabby with a white stomach and white feet. He has gray ears and back, a pink nose, and a long ringed gray tail. His eyes are dark yellow. He can be calm, and he purrs a lot, too.
I said, “Ok. Thanks,” and it was time to leave. I had a great experience at Pets Lifeline.
The Great Adventures of Stilton
I opened the Cat Room Door at Pets Lifeline and Stilton dashed out—again. This was the 100th time he escaped. I flew up the hall to get Stilton, but he kicked me in the face! It seemed like he was saying, “I don‘t like you, Dude!” What he really did not like was being returned to that room.
Stilton is a short haired male gray tabby with a white stomach. His ears are gray and he has white feet. His nose is pink and he has short whiskers. Stilton came to Pets Lifeline last July. He has seven brothers and sisters! He is the last to be adopted at eight months old. He is a playful kitty who loves to explore. He loves people and shows this by purring a lot.
Stilton deserves a home where he can run around and not have to try to escape.

Teddy Bear the Gorgeous Cat
I chose Teddy Bear because his colors are so beautiful. He is a medium haired buff tabby with white, and he is 2 ½ years old.
Some words that describe Teddy Bear are cute, playful, curious, busy, and mellow. He loves to sit in your lap and be groomed.
I would like Teddy Bear to have a caring home with lots of fun things to play with. I wish she could live with me.

Mia the Cuddle Bug
I knew the minute I saw Mia that she was really special. She would be the sparkle of your eye if you saw her. She is the cutest little dog you ever saw, and you cannot resist her. Another reason I chose her is because she is shy like me.
Mia has cinnamon fur, brown eyes, and a black nose. Her ears are really big but they’re cute. Her legs are really short. Mia is a Chihuahua mix. She is 4 months old with short fur.
I hope she finds the best home!

Mulan the Cutie Pie Girl

Mulan is a cute cuddle bug who loves to sit in your lap. She is a busy bee who is full of love. She will be your best friend if you let her get to know you.
I want Mulan to have a loving home. I hope she goes home to someone who loves her like I do.

Preston is outgoing. Pets Lifeline calls him a cuddle bug and a busy bee. He is young and playful.
I wish I could take him home to my house. I would love him a lot.

Kansas the Cute One
When I first saw Kansas I knew she was the perfect dog to write about. She is very cute with one ear up and one down. She is white with black and she is two years old.
Kansas is called a busy bee and a fetch fiend. She loves to run and she runs really fast.
I think Kansas is the perfect dog to adopt. If I did not live in an apartment my mom would get me a dog. I will tell her about Kansas.
Kansas a Sweet Dog
As soon as I saw Kansas I knew I had to write about her because she is the cutest dog. She is a terrier mix and is 2 years old. She weighs 14 pounds. Kansas has one white ear and one black ear. She also has some spots. She is the sweetest dog I’ve ever seen. I saw her picture in the newspaper first.
Kansas is a busy bee. She is also playful and outgoing, sweet and cute.
I would like Kansas to have a good home with someone who loves her. I want Kansas to be happy with her owner, and I wish it could be me. She is the sweetest and best dog ever!
Kansas the Fetching Dog
I picked Kansas because she looked funny when I saw her. I like that her ears are different colors and one is up and the other one is down.
I think it’s cool that she likes to fetch. A tennis ball would be really fun for her.
I would take her home if I could. It would be fun playing with her.

Tiger the Little Kitten
I chose Tiger because she was born on April Fool’s Day. She is a brown tabby little baby girl. Tiger is active and healthy and will be the perfect pet for you.
Tiger is getting her teeth. When the kids picked her up, her sharp little claws got stuck in their clothes! She mostly sleeps during the day and night. She has 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Their names are Bob, Ethan, Rosie, Sally, and Isabella. I think Tiger is adorable!
Tiger will be perfect for a young kid with no dogs near her so she will be safe. She likes to be held. She looks very cute when she sleeps. I think she might freak out when you look her in the eyes. I wish I could adopt Tiger!
